Atoning for the theft of a glamorous photo from her Facebook page...

This is a drawing I did of my friend Denise Barnes.  I snagged her glamourous photo from her Facebook page (shame on me) and went to drawing.  The sketches were fairly easy...the final, color version was easy but more time consuming.  I uploaded the portrait to a greeting card and had it mailed to her via my wholesale greeting cards system.  She thanked me and then told her best friend (who happens to be my sister) that she's in love with her card.  I can't tell you how good that makes me feel.

Drawing with sticks and circles makes it easy to draw pictures...

Drawing with sticks and circles makes it easy to draw pictures. In fact, it's how I begin most of my cartoon drawings.

I've been experimenting with vector drawing recently and I'm coming up with some interesting results. This drawing of my grandson Ivan is a pseudo-vector drawing done with Adobe Photoshop.

Now that I look back, it was these amazing before and after drawings that convinced me to try...

Looking back, it was the amazing before and after drawings that convinced me to try the observational drawing methods described in Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.  The previous link will take you to the full online gallery. The following link will take you to my own online gallery: Easy to Draw Pictures .

Amazing before and after drawings!

This is from the Draw Right online gallery (http://drawright.com/gallery.htm). ; Just one of several before and after drawings that were collected from a recent Five Day Intensive Drawing Class. The students came from various professions and backgrounds but all had one common goal - to learn to draw. Only five days had elapsed between "before" and "after"! Making it Easy to Draw Pictures

Why oh why do I draw every day?

Just so you know, I'm not affiliated with www.drawright.com nor am I compensated in any way if you were to purchase drawing on the Right Side of the Brain or if you were to participate in any of the intensive drawing workshops.  I promote this information for two reasons:
  1. It makes it easy for anyone to learn to draw pictures.
  2. The world would be a better place if we all just learned to draw.

The Solos is a comic I created to show how easy it is to draw pictures of cartoon characters...

The Solos is a single panel comic I created to show how easy it is to draw a cartoon character out of almost anything.  Basically all I did was fattened up the lettering and added features and dialogue to bring them to life.  A good example of this technique is displayed in the Walt Disney movie, Beauty and the Beast in which everything in the castle (maybe even the kitchen sink) is brought to life. I hope this gives you an idea how it's really easy to draw pictures of cartoon characters if you keep it simple.

The easiest way I’ve found to learn to draw is by reading Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain...

The easiest way I’ve found to learn to draw is by reading Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Dr. Betty Edwards. You don’t even have to read the whole book. The exercises in the beginning of the book will enable you to learn how easy it is to draw pictures in as little as one hour.  You can find this book at your library, any book store, or you order it directly from the official website (to which I have much affection but no affiliation).  It really is easy to draw pictures.

It's Time to Get Off Your "But" and Learn to Draw

Here's something you can do if you have an idea for a cartoon, or you want to tell a short story, or you want to create a funny greeting card and you think you can't draw, or you think you don't have time to learn.  Get some office stationary and use it to create your project.  Get your kids and your grand kids involved.  Or, get your co-workers and biz associates involved and come up with fun work related presentations and memos.  These are really easy and fun to create and it doesn't take a lot of time.

How to turn a blurry digital photo into a work of art

One quick and easy way to salvage a blurry or distorted photograph is to turn it into a drawing. This can be easily done by tracing the photo with a felt tip marker and then (using a pencil, a light box [any window will do] and a sheet of paper) tracing the felt tip marker lines. Then carefully analyze the details (the shadows and the highlights) in the photoraph and complete the drawing.  With enough practice you will soon discover that you can capture the likeness of any face without needing to trace it first.

Learning to draw will give you the power to easily overcome writers block

Learning to draw will give you the power to easily overcome writers block. For example, if I feel “blocked” I’ll create a few quick and easy to draw pictures and simply write my story based on the pictures I’ve drawn.  This also works if you just draw stick figures, scribble or doodle.

Once you’ve discovered how easy it is to draw pictures, you will be able to enhance your stories and articles with pictures. People love pictures. In the past year I’ve completed a 300 page webcomic draft, a 40 page short story, several shorter short stories, and a growing number of articles. This was just during the past 12 months. This is more than I’ve managed to complete in the past 20 years! And it all began when I raised my drawing skills to a higher level. And the best thing is that it only took about an hour!

My Grandson Brandon; "Don't mess with my milk!"

This photo of my grandson Brandon, taken when he was about a month old, was too blurry to send on a custom wholesale baby saying greeting card so I drew a cartoon of him and used it on the card instead.  I plan to describe how I drew this on the Easy to Draw Pictures website soon.  That way if you have a photo that didn't come out too great you can still turn it into something remarkable.

Come on, let's get creative...

Did you know that learning to draw develops the right side of your brain which is the side of your brain that handles creativity. Learning to draw will teach you to pay attention to detail and to see things as they really are. You will become a much more creative person once you’ve raised your drawing skills to a higher level.  Stop telling yourself that you can’t draw.  It really is Easy to Draw Picturesonce you know how.

Still Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain

I was a mediocre artist before I started reading Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Dr. Betty Edwards.  I’ve improved a lot since then.  I no longer need to use a grid when I’m drawing.  This drawing was originally a black and white pencil sketch and I decided to edit and color it in Photoshop.  You can still see traces of the grid lines (I’m removing them with the spot healing brush tool).  This book is widely acclaimed and it will make it easy to draw pictures, but I have to say it does have its critics.  Sometimes I just don’t get critics but I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion.  All I know is that it worked for me as it has for many, many others.  I’d be surprised if your local library doesn’t carry this book.  Go there and check it out!

How Learning to Draw Can Make You a Better Writer

Are you a writer? Did you know that learning how to draw can help you with the writing process? Once you learn how to draw (it only takes about an hour) you will learn how to see things in a whole new way. This includes how you look at your story.   Read the full article here...

The World Will Be a Better Place If We All Just Learn to Draw

I’m sometimes asked why I created my Easy to Draw Pictures website when so many of my articles don’t appear to be related to drawing. I created that website because I believe the world would be a better place if we all just learned to draw. I also believe that we’d all do better at whatever it is that we do if we all just learned to draw. As John Updike once said, “Any activity becomes creative when the doer cares about doing it right, or better.”
